Lent is a preparation for the celebration of the greatest feast of the liturgical year – Easter. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are especially important during Lent. Without prayer, fasting and almsgiving are merely actions we do out of tradition without much meaning. Prayer is our conversation with God.
The Church's regulation regarding fasting and abstinence are as follows: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Fasting means partaking of only one full meal and some food is permitted at breakfast and around midday not to equal a full meal each time. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.
Activities this week begin with the K of C breakfast, then Confirmation preparation, Prayer group with Gloria Salinas, Parish Penance Service for all, the Rosary and Divine Mercy Devotion, RCIC in Spanish, RCIA in Spanish and English, Wednesday morning Bible Study, Faith Formation, Knights of Columbus General Council, Irish Stew cook off, Baptism Seminar, Bible Study on the Book of Acts, Confession, St. Vincent pantry distribution and Catholic's Divorce Survival Guide.
The Stations of the Cross & Soup Suppers are held each Friday during Lent. The Way of The Cross is a traditional meditation on The Passion of Our Lord prayed immediately following the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Following the Stations, all are welcome to come to the Parish Hall for a meatless soup supper or Fish Dinner and fellowship. The soup suppers are provided at no cost however there is a reasonable cost for the Fish Dinner.
