Western Days 2013 is another one for the books

The Cosmic Solar float won 1st prize for Commercial Floats in Saturday's Western Days Parade. This is Cosmic Solar's third year participating in the parade. Every year the Shadzi family encourages all of their employees and their families to dress in yellow and greet Valley Center residents from the float.

Although three different entities were involved in putting on Western Days 2013, it went off more or less without a hitch, showing that when there is a crisis that Valley Center residents pull together to make it happen.

Several thousand people lined up along the two miles of the parade route for what was a remarkably pleasant day for a parade (i.e. no sunstrokes).

This year an unexpected beneficiary of Western Days was the VC Parks & Rec district. The district stepped forward to host the vendors on the VC Community Center, as well as to sponsor musical entertainment at the stage, hosted by Charles Carr.

According to Parks Board Pres. Marcia Townsend, the district made about $4,000 renting out vendors' spaces, a money-making opportunity that presented itself when the VC Chamber of Commerce found that it didn't have the resources to sponsor any more activities than the parade, the honorary mayor's race and the T-shirt contest.

Joyce Holmes, co-chairman of the Stampede Rodeo told The Roadrunner that she is working to find out figures on just how successful financially the three days of rodeo were. "Our new accountant is still working on the books, but it was a good size crowd Friday. We have seating for 2,200 and there weren't any empty spots. As for Saturday, it was packed and the grounds were too. Sunday it was a smaller crowd but it still look good for the first time in twelve years," she said.
