Almost 1,700 homes lose power after vehicle knocks into power pole

October 16, 2013
A single vehicle accident on Saturday afternoon left over a thousand Valley Center residents without power for around three hours. In some instances, though, restoring power took a bit longer.

According to Amber Albrecht, spokesperson for San Diego Gas & Electric, a car damaged two power poles near the intersection of Valley Center Road and Molly Anne Ct. around 12:15 p.m.

Four hundred and thirty-five customers lost power immediately as a result of the crash. An additional 1,200 customers subsequently had to be disconnected by SDG&E for safety reasons.

An SDG&E repair crew responded quickly to the scene, and were able to restore power to about 1,400 of the homes by 3 p.m. on Saturday. Power to the remaining houses was fully restored by 3 a.m. Sunday morning, Albrecht said. One of the two power poles needed to be replaced entirely.

California Highway Patrol officials could not be reached for comment by press time.
