Valley Center woman dies from burns sustained at residential fire

November 19, 2013
A Valley Center woman perished early Tuesday morning from injuries sustained during a residential fire.

A Nov. 18 blaze partially damaged a house at 14150 Kelwona Lane and caused the hospitalization of 61 year-old Penny Holland who was rushed to UCSD Medical Center with third-degree burns covering 95 percent of her body, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. County officials regard the incident as an accident, but an investigation by a bomb and arson unit from the County Sheriff's Department is ongoing.

Holland lived in the residence with her husband and son. What began as an unassuming day suddenly turned tragic, according to witnesses.

"On the afternoon of (Nov. 18) she was in her bedroom getting ready for a doctor's appointment. Her husband was in their son's room when he heard her start yelling. He quickly responded and found her leaning over the bed, completely engulfed in flames," states a report from the office.

Paramedics arrived after her husband called 911. After a poor prognosis was given at the university emergency center, family members decided against resuscitating Holland. She went into cardiac arrest early the next morning at 12:54 a.m. The cause of death was attributed to third-degree burns and respiratory injuries.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the blaze which took Penny Holland's life occurred on Nov. 28. In fact, it occurred Nov. 18.

It is not Nov. 28 yet. Perhaps you meant Nov. 18.

I assume that this tragedy occurred November 18 (2013), and not November 28th of a previous year?
