The Giving Tree

November 21, 2013
"Once there was a tree, and she loved a little boy," — Shel Silverstein from The Giving Tree.

Every year, the Valley Roadrunner helps to bring gifts to children in need in the local community through the annual Giving Tree.

Located inside the Roadrunner office, the tree has tags with the age and sex of a child in the community who could potentially go without a Christmas gift this year without the participation of the community.

These boys and girls, along with their families, need our help to make their holiday season a little brighter," said Kim Harris, consulting editor. "If we all pitch in and work together we can make the holidays a little bit brighter for those in need."

The ages of the children are compiled and then provided to the Roadrunner by the Valley Center Pauma Unified School District who then notifies parents their child(ren) has been selected for the program. Parents will bring a letter to the newspaper office Dec. 19 or 20 to pick up a gift for their child(ren).

Members of the community can participate by stopping by the office located at 27525 Valley Center Road to pick a child from the tree and provide gift(s) for him or her.

"It's my understanding that this has been a long-standing tradition here at the Roadrunner," Harris said. "We fully intend to continue on with this tradition with help from our community. I've heard wonderful things about the Giving Tree and can't wait to see the end result of this endeavor."

All gifts need to be wrapped and returned to the Roadrunner office no later than 5 p.m. on December 16 for distribution.

"If a person can't wrap their gifts they can bring them in to us and we'll take care of the wrapping," said Harris. "We have community groups who have volunteered to help with wrapping if needed."
