Road work begins this week

November 24, 2013
Road safety improvements are set to begin this week on Valley Center Road, just south of Mirar De Valle Road, but the well-traveled highway is expected to remain open to through traffic during construction, according to the County of San Diego Department of Public Works.

A narrow, raised median will be installed where channelizers currently mark the left turn lane at the intersection of Valley Center and Mirar De Valle Roads.

Michael Long, project manager, said that channelizers are the tall, flexible plastic markers.

"The benefit of replacing them is to have a more permanent identification of the left turn pocket," Long said in an email.

Periodically, during construction, one lane of the four-lane road will be closed in each direction but access will remain for businesses and residents.

Long said no detours will be necessary.

The new median installation is part of a $425,000 safety improvement project along Valley Center Road that began in August with streetlight installations at Mac Tan and Sunset Roads.

The money was funded by a grant from the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians, and the project approved by the Valley Center Community Planning Group.

The improvements also include colored crosswalk installations at the intersections of Valley Center Road and Woods Valley Road, and also at the intersection at Lilac Road, according to Long.

Other road enhancement features that are part of the safety project are digital speed signs at the northern and southern village areas, and the placement of reflectors on the existing medians between Woods Valley and Cole Grade Roads.

The Mirar De Valle median is expected to be complete by January 2014, according to the public works department.
