Burglars target Valley Center Little League

January 08, 2014
Sometime between Dec. 14 and Dec. 29 vandals broke into the score booths and equipment locker at the Valley Center Little League fields, damaging property and stealing two PA systems. Given that the doors were enforced with an iron bar bolted to the wall, the hoodlums were certainly determined to break-in.

"They ripped the bar out of the wall," said Ken Boone, president of VCLL. "Both doors were completely off the hinges."

VCLL was inactive over the holidays so Boone wasn't aware of the incident until Dec. 29, when he discovered that the PA systems, a shop vacuum, an American flag, and some extra locks and keys were all missing. Boone estimates the vacuum will cost around $100 to replace and the PA systems will likely cost even more.

"We need a PA system because we have tryouts on Saturday," said Boone.

Inside the score booths at the major's field Boone found evidence that someone had started a fire, likely to keep warm. The vandals also tried to pry their way into the snack bar, but on that front at least they were unsuccessful.

However, that's not the end of it. Over the past weekend, someone spray-painted a certain four-letter word on the equipment locker. According to Doug Johnsen, general manager of Valley Center Parks and Recreation District, this isn't the first time the Little League fields have been defiled.

"We've had vandalism before, and it's usually in the off-season," said Johnsen. "Nobody's around, they're kind of vacant."

A few years ago some people pulled the air vent off the concession stand and wreaked havoc on the inside.

VCLL and the Parks and Rec District will be splitting the cost of the repair, and Boone is taking measures to keep this from happening again in the future. He plans to install a surveillance system in the coming weeks, as well as requesting that sheriff's deputies make more frequent patrols of the fields. The vandals still remain unknown at this time.
