Paving on Lilac Road, which began on Feb. 12, is causing long delays for locals and commuters. While delays are inevitable during this type of project, the payoff upon its completion is a better, safer road for all who traverse the steep and winding road, according to project manager John Marlatt.

"This new road will be a rubber mix which gives a longer life expectancy out of the road. It should last a minimum of 15 years," said Marlatt. "It cuts down on noise pollution and it's designed for the water to run through it so it cuts down on hydroplaning. It will make the roads safer for everyone."

ABC Construction Co. is working on the project, which involves patching, grinding, paving and striping on Lilac Road between Valley Center Road and Old Castle Road. The project is expected to be completed March 28.

Hours of construction will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and traffic will be controlled by using flaggers and a pilot car. Wait times can be up to 20 minutes so drivers need to be prepared for additional time on the road when coming up or down the grade.

"When we start to do overlaying which will be from March 5 to 13, that is where the 20 minutes delay will come in," said Marlatt. "Right now wait times are averaging five to 10 minutes, we want to keep the traffic moving so people can get where they need to go."

Drivers are reminded to exercise caution when driving through construction zones. If a "Wait for pilot car sign" is at the end of your driveway, do not enter the roadway until the pilot car arrives and instructs you to proceed. Entering the roadway before the pilot car arrives could cause accidents.
