Fatal hit and run suspect still at-large

February 26, 2014
California Highway Patrol is still searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit and run that occurred on Bear Valley Parkway in Escondido Feb. 3. They are asking the public for help in locating the suspect.

At approximately 11 p.m. 23-year-old Benjamin Ramirez from Escondido was walking on Bear Valley Parkway from Boyle Avenue when he was struck and killed by the suspect vehicle described by a witness as a medium size white box truck.

The truck fled the scene, southbound on Bear Valley Parkway and has yet to be located according to California Highway Patrol Information Officer Jim Bettencourt.

We need the public's help to figure out who the truck belongs to," said Bettencourt. "Any type of information would help us to help the victim's family to understand what happened, it's really important for them that we get closure on this case."

The witness also claimed to hear loud noises coming from the vehicle possibly indicating the vehicle has a liftgate.

According to a press release from CHP, the suspect vehicle should be damaged on the left front area and could include wreckage on the bumper, hood, left headlamp and fender.

The vehicle's air intake vent cover was broken off and left at the scene. The part belongs on any year Freightliner M2 which is commonly used as a delivery vehicle.

Bettencourt said that with all the hit and runs happening lately sometimes information gets skewed.

"But this happened in North County and its close to home for us," he said. "We really need to talk to the people who were involved in this."

Anyone who has information on this collision is asked to call the Oceanside CHP office during regular business hours at 760-757-1675 or our Communications Center 24 hours a day at 858- 637-3800.
