5,000 lbs in avocados stolen from grove

March 05, 2014
Sometime between 8 a.m. on Feb. 22 and 8 a.m. on Feb. 24, $6,000 worth of avocados was stolen from Lilac Hills Ranch, near the intersection of West Lilac Road and Standel Lane.

"The loss was 5,000 lbs of avocados, approximately," said Lt. Dan Brislin, commander at the Valley Center Sheriff's Substation. "It looks like there was a fence that was cut a few days prior."

According to Brislin, the stolen avocados were handpicked, an impressive feat considering the enormous quantity of stolen fruit and the short window of time when the heist must have taken place.

"We have no indication of how long it took or any indication of how many people it took to pick that. There's no suspect information at this time," said Brislin. Grand theft of fruit or fowl is a felony offense.

"If anybody has any information about that particular theft they should call Detective Dave Brannan," said Brislin. The Valley Center Sheriff's Substation can be reached at 858-565-5200.
