Valley Center celebrates Wester Days May 23 - 25
May 07, 2014
The 2014 Western Days Parade: A Home Grown Musical Celebration is being hosted by the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce. Last-minute entry forms for those participating in the parade are still being accepted. The parade is a great way to advertise local businesses and it's free. It is also another way the Chamber of Commerce is introducing organizations and businesses to the community. Visit www.VcChamber.com for entry forms.

This year, two new contests are being introduced to Western Days. The VC Chamber is hosting the first annual Battle of the Bands to add fun and excitement to the parade by getting locals involved in the band competition. The parade judges will be looking for original uniforms, unusual musical instruments (even hand-made instruments), original music, and great performances. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best in each category. One-hundred dollars will be awarded to the winning division consisting of one to five members; $150 to six to 10 members; $200 for 11 to 24 members; and $300 will be awarded to the winning division comprised of 25 or more members. Winners are determined by parade judges. There is no age limit.

The Cosmic Solar Float won first prize for commercial floats in the 2013 Western Days Parade.
The Horse Dropping Contest is another new event that is fun for everyone to participate in. For $2, anyone can place a 12-inch circle where they determine horse droppings will land along the parade route. Each winner will be paid $10 after the parade ends. For more information on both contests, contact VC Chamber at (760) 749-8472.

The Chamber is still looking for general sponsors to contribute any amount to the event.

"We need donations," said Stuart Holthaus, VC Chamber of Commerce Vice President and Parade Chairperson. "If everyone contributed $100, this would cover the cost of the parade." All donations defray the $10,000 cost required to put on the parade.

Sponsorships are also needed for the Marching Band and Horse Dropping Contests and for the Announcer's Sponsor.

A special thank-you is given to MyRon L for being the parade's T-shirt sponsor. Gratitude is extended to Harrah's Resort and Casino for their $2,500 donation; Western Heavy Equipment Rental for donating $250; and the World Kuk Gung Federation for donating $100. Sponsorships are available by contacting Mary Gordon at the Chamber.

Volunteers are needed to set up announcer stands on parade day and place road signs on Wednesday and Thursday before the event. For anyone interested in assisting with this Valley Center tradition held May 23 through May 25. Contact Mary at the Chamber office at (760) 749-8422. For any additional information, please contact Parade Chairperson Stuart Holthaus, A-1 Irrigation General Manager at (760) 749-1213.

"We're looking for people to have fun," said Holthaus. "We're having a Horse Dropping Contest to win money. We're encouraging people to join the Marching Band Contest. It's all about having fun and making it as fun as possible. Community involvement is the key."
