Lilac School's FAVE program Family Art Night offers fun for all
May 15, 2014Lilac School's second annual FAVE Family Art Night is promising fun for the entire family all while raising money for the school's popular art program.
"We had our first one last year and it was incredibly successful," said Amy Copeland, coordinator of Lilac School's Fine Arts Volunteer Education, or FAVE Program. "We are going to have live music and we take the courtyard of Lilac School and take thousands of pieces of artwork the kids have done throughout the year and hang it in the courtyard. We have make and take booths for the kids so they can make and take things that go along with our theme."
The theme for this year's event is Art is Intelligence Having Fun.
"It's actually a quote from Albert Einstein," said Copeland. "I just heard the quote and I just loved it. I decided it was just perfect because art is a thoughtful experience for kids."
This year's event will feature music from a professional steel drum band, the auction, and even a raffle featuring ninth row seats to a Padre's game, a gift certificate for $100 to an art supply store, a free month of gymnastics classes and free month of dance classes.
Items on the auction include home furnishings, clay pieces and artwork created by students in the school.
"When we say the kids made auction products they are not just little things," Copeland said. "They are beautiful things that you would want in your home."
Of course no art night would be complete without food and organizers at FAVE Family Art Night is planning on serving bean and chicken tostadas available at a reasonable price to help raise money for the program that helps to introduce kids to the arts by raising money for art supplies used at the school.
One aspect of the program involves local artists demonstrating their crafts for kids throughout the evening. This year two notable artists, Gladys Jimenez and Darrel McPherson from Art Tradition Gallery in Escondido will be on hand to demonstrate their crafts. There will also be a dedication of a mosaic, a collaborative piece between Kim Emerson a professional mosaic tile artist, the students at Lilac School, the staff and the volunteers.
"She came to the school and 17 of the classes added tile along with much of the staff," Copeland said. "The volunteers completed the mosaic."
The mosaic will be on display at the school where volunteers have hung it on the exterior of the school in the courtyard.
There will be a lot going on," said Copeland. "I think it's coming together great, I am really excited for the event. Just the idea of thousands of kid's art along with everything else we have going on, it's just going to be a beautiful night."
Copeland says it takes a lot of time and effort to put an event of this magnitude together and she is grateful for everyone who has donated door prizes, auction items, and volunteered time with the students to bring FAVE Family Art Night to fruition.
"I just want to thank the fantastic Lilac parent volunteers who have worked all year with the students," she said.
Admission is free for the event, which will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the silent auction will end at 7:30 p.m. For more information on FAVE Family Art Night contact Copeland by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
