Rattlesnake expert and beloved local physician, Dr. Roy Johnson, will present a lecture on rattlesnakes, to take place at the VC library on Sat. June 28 at 9:30 a.m. hosted by the Friends of Hellhole Canyon. This event is free to the public, but get there early as this highly popular lecture was standing room only the last time Dr Johnson presented this informative talk.


Valley Center Art Association (VCAA) will sponsor two guest art instructors this June to provide art instruction in pastels and in watercolor. The adult classes will be held in the Seminar Room at the Valley Center Library.  Classes are open to the public subject to space availability.  There is no cost to attend the classes and art supplies will be provided. Watercolorist Tom Tiedeman will instruct a watercolor class Thursday, June 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The class will be limited to 15 students. Pastel artist Alicia Sotherland will teach a class in pastels Saturday, June 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This class is limited to 12 students.  Prior registration is required for both classes.  Contact Ed Labrado at (760) 751-4190 to register for the classes. All Escondido Public Library facilities will be closed to the public for the installation of a new library catalog software system on Wednesday, June 18. The closure will be for one day only. During the closure, library users can visit library.escondido.org, to access eBooks, use online research tools, and view the calendar of events. Library users will be able to return materials to the Main Library during the closure, and fines will not be charged for items due on June 18.The Library will reopen for business as usual at 10 a.m.on Thursday, June 19.


During the summer the District Office and Business Office

will be closed on the following Friday's: June 20, June 27, July 4, July 11, July 18 and July 25.  The offices will be open regular business hours 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday thru Thursday.  


Escondido's Fire Chief Mike Lowry and Police Chief Craig Carter are the guest speakers at the June 25 luncheon meeting of the Escondido Republican Women, Federated. They will be speaking on public safety and what residents need to know to better protect themselves and their property. The meeting begins promptly at 11:30 a.m. at Cocina del Charro, 890 W. A week-long drama camp will be held at Community Lutheran Church on East Valley Parkway in Escondido June 23 – 27 from 9 a.m. – noon. The camp will focus on several important theater arts categories including pantomime, improvisation, blocking, script writing and choreography.  Students will participate in a variety of acting activities unique to this camp, all creating a pathway to professional acting. Limited registration is now open for children ages 5 – 18 years of age. Cost is $75 and fees include all equipment, materials, insurance and certificates. Escondido Public Library's Summer Reading Clubs begins Monday, June 23 and runs through August 2, 2014. This year's theme is "Paws to Read," encouraging book and animal-lovers of all ages to "pause," read, and discuss what they've read with others. The Library's Adult Summer Reading Club offers the opportunity to record books read and share recommendations and reviews with others. Beginning June 23, 2014, adults can join by registering in-person at the Library Information Desk or online at library.escondido.org/adultSRC. Participants who submit book reviews will be eligible for prizes. The Adult Summer Reading Club will kick off with a free movie, "We Bought a Zoo," showing at 5:00 p.m. in the Turrentine Room.
