The Giving Tree

Every year for the past several years the Valley Roadrunner has helped to make Christmas a little merrier for Valley Center youth in need through the Giving Tree program. In the lobby of our offices — located at 27525 Valley Center Road — there is a Christmas tree with the ages and sex of children who are in need of our assistance. Members of the community are invited to stop by during regular business hours and pick a child from the tree and provide gift(s) for a child who otherwise might not receive a present this holiday season.

Community support is vital for the success of programs such as the Giving Tree and for those who may not have the time to devote to a long-term volunteer opportunity, offers a great way to give back this holiday season.

Ages of the children are compiled and then provided to the Roadrunner by the Valley Center Pauma Unified School District who then notifies parents that their child(ren) has been selected for the program. Parents will bring a letter to the newspaper office Dec. 19 or 20 to pick up a gift for their child(ren).

These boys and girls, along with their families, need our help to make their holiday season a little brighter," said Kim Harris, consulting editor. "If we all pitch in and work together we can make the holidays a little bit brighter for those in need."

All gifts need to be wrapped and returned to the Roadrunner office no later than 5 p.m. on Dec. 16 for distribution.

"If a person can't wrap their gifts they can bring them in to us and we'll take care of the wrapping," said Harris. "We have community groups who have volunteered to help with wrapping if needed."
