Busy schedule keeps VC track teams running hard

The Valley Center Track & Field teams have been busy the last few weeks, running in five different events since the middle of March.

The Jaguars ran in three dual meets and two invitationals, racking up a host of outstanding individual finishes along the way.

The Jags traveled to San Pasqual for a dual meet on March 14, and despite being swept on all levels, they earned ten varsity wins.

Taking first place for the Jaguars were Anthony Ricks in the 100m (11.37), Bannon Greer in the 1600m (4:36.31), Matt Finlay and in the pole vault (13-feet-3) and the 1600m relay team of Ricks, Greer, Matt Mahoney and Michael McInerny (3:29.07).

Savanna Reilly led the Lady Jaguars with a double win, taking first in the shot put (34–2) and the discus (101–99), while the other winners were Vanessa Heredia in the high jump (5–10), Melina Heredia in the long jump (16–4), Emily Sanders in the pole vault (8–6) and the 1600m relay team of Hailie Santana, Vanessa Heredia, Olivia Spencer and Melina Heredia (4:16.63).

Then on March 16 the Jaguars took part in the Falcon Relays at Torrey Pines High School, where they finished with a double winner, an individual winner and a host of heat winners.

The double-win came from Reilly, who took the shot put (33–11.5) and the discus (105–10), while Jorge Maldonado won the discus (128–1) and took second overall in the shot put (42–5). Also finishing in the top ten were Clara Padinske in second in the high jump (5–0), Delaney Cummings in the 300 hurdles (50.10), Ricks in fourth in the 100m (11.58) and Finlay in fourth in the pole vault (13–0).

The heat winners were McInerny in the 100 (11.62), Greer in the 400 (52.07), Cummings in the 100 hurdles (17.39) and the boys 800 relay team of Ricks, Mahoney, Greer and McInerny (1:33.37).

Up next was a dual meet with San Marcos, and both Jaguar varsity teams got a victory, with the boys winning 86–46 and the girls winning 101–29.

The boys won 11 events in the meet, with Finlay leading the way with a triple-win and Maldonado not far behind with a double-win.

Finlay took first in the 110m hurdles (17.91), the high jump (5–6) and the pole vault (13–0), while Maldonado's two wins came in the shot put (43–10) and the discus (125–5).

The Jags had four other individual winners and two relay team winners, as Greer won the 400m (52.87), Rodrigo Rodriguez won the 1600m (4:37.70), Ricks won the 300m hurdles (45.85) and Brett Henderson won the long jump (20–8). The winning relay teams were Greer, Ricks, Mahoney and McInerny in the 400m relay (45.61) and McInerny, Mahoney, Ricks and Greer in the 1600m relay (3:34.31).

The Lady Jaguars had a pair of double-winners, as Reilly won the shot put (34–5) and the discus (104–2) and Hannah Nealis won the 100m hurdles (16.64) and the 300m hurdles (48.05).

They also posted eight individual wins and two relay wins, as Melina Heredia won the 100m (13.21), Santana won the 200m (26.70), Vanessa Heredia won the 400m (1:01.08), Kaylee Hudson won the 800m (2:26.21), Helen Lopez won the 1600m (5:41.84), Padinske won the high jump (4–6), Sanders won the pole vault (7–6) and Charlotte Connell won the triple jump (33–7).

The winning relay teams were Melina Heredia, Connell, Santana and Vanessa Heredia in the 400m relay (51.10) and Santana, Hudson, Vanessa Heredia and Melina Heredia in the 1600m relay (4:10.80).

The Jaguars then brought home a trio of top-five finishes in the Mt. Carmel Invite on March 23, as Greer took third in the 400m (51.53), Hudson took third in the 1600m (5:17.97) and Reilly took fourth in the shot put (33–3).

And on Thursday, the Jaguars hosted Ramona in a dual meet that saw the Jaguars win nine events in the boys varsity competition and 11 events in the girls varsity competition.

The boys finished with a pair of double-winners, as McInerny took first in the 100m (11.32) and the 200m (22.73) and Brett Henderson took first in the long jump (19–11) and finished in a tie for first in the high jump (5–4).

Also winning for the Jags were Greer in the 400m (52.19), Ricks in the 110m hurdles (16.09), Maldonado in the discus (125–0) and Jake Reden in the triple jump (37–4), while Finlay tied Henderson for the top spot in the high jump and Ryan Olson and Juan Cisneros tied for the win in the pole vault (10–6).

Meanwhile, the Lady Jaguars boasted four double-winners, as Melina Heredia won the 200m (26.84) and the long jump (16–6), Hudson won the 800m (2:30.19) and the 1600m (5:28.89), Nealis won the 100m hurdles (17.27) and the 300m hurdles (49.07) and Reilly won the shot put (32–11) and the discus (107–8).

The individual winners for the Lady Jags were Vanessa Heredia in the 400m (1:01.00) and Sophie Kraus in the triple jump (32–9.5), while the team of Melina Heredia, Connell, Santana and Vanessa Heredia won the 400m relay (50.74).
