June 19, 2013The Jags Volleyball Club U16 team recently competed hard and came out with a second-place finish in the top pool of the final Volley High Club Volleyball Tournament of the season.
Coach Joy Leichtfuss was pleased with the effort and improvement of the team this year.
"We have been working very hard in practice and in tournaments since December, and we've always had our eye on earning our way into the top bracket of the tournament," says Leichtfuss. "In the past few months it finally came together for us, and we earned first-place finishes in two of our last three tournaments. When I received the e-mail that we had been seeded in the top pool for our final tournament, I was excited. We had watched the teams play on that "top court" and they were good. Very good."
In order to play with those teams, though, Valley Center had to believe that they were also "very good" and realize that they could compete with the top teams. So that Sunday morning, after warm-ups and a pep talk from Coach Joy, the Jags came out strong in their first game against a San Diego Volleyball Club team, and made short work of them, beating them in two straight games. Next up was Desert Attack, a very strong team from Imperial Valley. For the first game, the Jags ladies battled with the opposition, but ended up losing in two games. Right after the loss to Desert Attack, the Jags were up to play again.
"The third game of the day is typically difficult for us," says Leichtfuss. "The girls are tired, the gym is hot, and concentration begins to lag."
But the Jags rallied together and gave every ounce of energy they had and beat another San Diego Volleyball Club team to clinch a second-place finish.
"I am so proud of my girls, not just because they won that last game, but because they battled back after a difficult loss. The mental toughness and team unity they displayed was impressive," says Coach Joy. "In fact, these girls have impressed me all season. I would coach this group of girls again in a heartbeat." Expect to hear great things from our Valley Center volleyball program in the years to come!
