Valley Center's boys under-13 Hurricanes overcame a short bench to beat a tough Nomads team to win the San Diego Pegasus Cup.

The Hurricanes won all three games in group play en route to bringing home the trophy.

In the first game, Valley Center played Newcastle United FC and played excellent soccer to take a 4–0 win.

Up next for the Hurricanes was an opponent that they faced last year during the regular season—Nomads. The team played Valley Center tough in the first half to keep the game tied at halftime.

But in the second half, Valley Center controlled the pace of the game and took the match 4–1.

On day two, with Valley Center already assured a spot in he finals, the Hurricanes played San Diego SC. Trying to preserve players energy for the championship match, the Hurricanes played with a modified formation that lacked an explosive attack, but instead relied on a strong defense. Valley Center was able to get two scores on counter attacks and went on to win 2–0.

The championship game was held Sunday afternoon against Nomads. The game proved tough for both squads, but especially for a Valley Center team that only counted on one substitute player throughout the entire tournament.

The Hurricanes took the lead with goals from Hernan Camacho and Mario Torres, but with a 2–0 lead, the game got interesting down the stretch.

Nomads got a late goal off a corner kick to pull within one, but the Valley Center defense held strong through the final minutes to hang on for a 2–1 victory.

In four games, the Hurricanes scored ten goals. Fueling the attack were Hernan Camacho, Jose Saldana, Cristian Torres, Mario Torres, Emanuel Luna, Alfonso Samano and Omar Quiroz.

Valley Center's defense was stellar, conceding only two goals. Defensive captain Angel Ramirez patrolled the back alongside Joe Schaner, Raul Ruiz, Jesus Saldana, and Silverio Moreno.

In the past year, the Valley Center Hurricanes have won two tournaments, earned one runner-up finish and had two semifinal losses, along with a regular-season championship. Next for the hurricanes will be Coronado Crown City Classic, which takes place at the end of July.
