Lady Jaguars expect rebuilding after losing nine field hockey seniors
August 07, 2013Entering her third season as the head coach of the Valley Center varsity field hockey coach, Rebecca Embrey has already established her team's reputation for achieving success on the field. The Lady Jaguars won 18 games and a Valley League title in 2011, Embrey's first season at the helm. And in 2012, the Lady Jags won 13 games and advanced to the CIF quarterfinals.
This year, Coach Embrey is excited to see the hard work put in by her team in the offseason, but knows she has some gaps to fill after graduating nine seniors, including Cassidy Nowak, Laura Sengstacke, Emily Sanders, Ali Layne and outstanding goalkeeper Sophie Kraus.
"We ' r e l o o k i n g a t a rebuilding year with only five returning players from last year 's team," Coach Embrey says. "We graduated nine seniors, but we had a lot of girls show up during the summer for open field, which included a handful of talented incoming freshmen that can fight for a starting position on varsity."
Coming back to the team in 2013 are seniors Delaney Cummings, Alex Velazquez and Rebecca Vizcarra, along with junior Savanna Fiehler and sophomore Madeline Stehly.
And joining the team will be juniors Kaylin Ryan and Nina Montejano, both of whom were key members of last year's varsity lacrosse team that advanced to the CIF championship game.
