Lady Jags win twice, tie once in first four field hockey games

September 10, 2013
Heading into the 2013 season, the Valley Center varsity field hockey team knew it faced the challenge of being competitive with a young, inexperienced team.

For Head Coach Rebecca Embrey, the preseason scrimmages provided good opportunities to build confidence and focus on the fundamentals.

"From these scrimmages I saw that we did a good job connecting our passes and moving the ball up the field," she said after the Lady Jags scrimmaged both Mission Vista and Point Loma. "For this point in the season we were well conditioned. As for things to focus on for the season, we need to do a better job of clearing the ball out of our defensive end quicker and we need to take a shot on goal as soon as the opportunity is available instead of waiting to get the perfect shot off."

The Lady Jags made the most of their shots in the first game of the regular season, as they rolled over Valahalla 6–0 on a scorching afternoon at Jaguar Stadium.

Delaney Cummings scored a hat trick and the other goals were added by Emily Hutchinson, Becca Vizcarra and Savanna Fiehler as they controlled the tempo of the game on offense.

The defense was strong in front of new goaltender Bailey Sanders, who posted a shutout in her first game at the varsity level.

"This is a huge confidence booster to play in this kind of heat and to see where we've come with our conditioning," Coach Embrey said after the win. "I love that we were aggressive inside the circle and that we have confidence in each other to be willing to pass to anyone and not just rely on one player to carry the offense."

That confidence helped the Lady Jags in the Valley Center Tournament this weekend, as they battled to a 1–1 tie against Del Norte, then beat Mission Vista 6–0 before falling to Westview 4–0.

Cummings added three more goals and Fiehler scored two more in the tournament to bolster their scoring numbers.

The Lady Jaguars have three more games in the next week. They play at Cathedral Catholic today at 6:30 p.m., then host San Marcos at noon on Saturday before playing host to Helix on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
