After a great season last year, the Valley Center varsity girls tennis team has been building on those successes in 2013 and the Lady Jaguars are poised to go even further than they did last year.

The Lady Jags entered the week with a 4–8 overall record, but have been sparked by the individual success of their top two doubles teams.

Lexi Striler and Kaitlyn Hillard play first doubles and, after moving past the first round of the CIF Individual Tournament last year with a win over Del Norte, the duo is pushing hard to top their phenomenal breakout season.

In second doubles, Olivia Spencer and Kristina Mansueto are playing better and better as the season goes on, while freshman Brooke Clark has been another pleasant surprise for second-year Head Coach Seth Leichtfuss, who sees his team coming together as the season progresses.

"Both doubles teams made it to CIF last year and they're both looking to make it again and go even deeper," he says. "If we do well in the Valley League Tournament, that helps our seeding for CIF. And we're hoping to make it to the team CIF tournament as well."

Coach Leichtfuss is excited not only about this season, but for the future of VCHS tennis, a sport that has, in recent seasons, faced the challenge of just fielding a full team.

"We've had a great turnout this year. We had twenty-five come out for tryouts and we kept fifteen on varsity and ten on JV," Coach Leichtfuss says. "It's helpful because we've had some unfortunate injuries and we've had girls step up and help the team. Two of our top players are seniors [Striler and Mansueto] so we'll have to do a little rearranging next year, but we've been happy to see how much interest there's been in tennis. Some are out just to have fun, some are more serious, but almost everybody has really been improving."

The Lady Jaguars finished the regular season on Tuesday at Orange Glen and hopefully head into the team CIF tournament that begins this Tuesday.
