Jaguars take Valley League title with water polo win over Del Norte
November 07, 2013For the second year in a row, the Valley Center varsity boys water polo team captured the Valley League title, as the Jaguars split their two games in the pool this week.
The Jaguars earned their second consecutive league title with a win over Del Norte after suffering a tough loss against Santana earlier in the week. The Jaguars played at Santana last Tuesday, Oct. 29, and couldn't overcome a slow start in taking an 11–8 loss.
After a rough outing against Santana the previous week, the Jags had a better start this time a round scoring two goals and allowing four. The Jags were able to hold Santana to two goals in the second, while scoring one, to trail 6–3 at halftime.
Santana scored two goals in the third quarter while holding the Jags scoreless, giving the Sultans an 8–3 lead heading into the fourth. The Jags put in a charge, scoring five goals and allowing three, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
"The guys showed a ton of improvement compared to our game against Santana last week," head coach Kyle Kline said. "Luke Marshall was able to get Santana's leading scorer into foul trouble in the first quarter which changed the momentum in the game. The guys put together a solid fourth quarter, but we came up just a bit short."
Paul Schaner had three goals, seven steals, two blocks. and one exclusion. Luke Marshall had two goals, one assist, one steal, three exclusions, and one penalty shot. David Trok had one goal, three assists. Tim Sheehy had one goal, one assist, two steals, and one block. Jared Schaner had one goal, and one exclusion.
Brock Daugherty had two assists, five steals, and one exclusion. Gavin Marcon had a great game with ten goal saves. Then on Wednesday, the Jaguars traveled to Del Norte to take on the Nighthawks in a battle for the league title. After a nip-and-tuck game through the first three quarters, the Jaguars played an outstanding fourth quarter to take the win, 10–5.
The Jags scored two goals but allowed two in the first. They were able to earn two more goals in the second and allowed none to lead 4–2 at halftime.
Del Norte had a three-goal run in the third, with the Jags scoring one, knotting the game at five heading into the fourth.
However, the Jags put together a solid quarter to score five goals and hold Del Norte scoreless to take the win and the league championship.
"We had a slow start but the guys really pulled through in the fourth quarter to earn the league championship," Coach Kline said.

Brock Daugherty played well with one goal, one assist, one steal, and one exclusion. Will Russell played well with one goal and two steals. David Trok had two assists, two steals. Tim Sheehy had one assist. Gavin Marcon had another great game with ten goal saves, two assists, and two steals.
After playing at Torrey Pines earlier in the week, the Jaguars will finish the regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 at San Pasqual at 4:15 p.m.
