Lady Jaguars win twice in last four volleyball matches

While the early part of the fall season may not have gone exactly the way first-year head coach Bill Dunckel would have wanted, the Valley Center varsity girls volleyball team has been working hard and has been playing very well as the season draws to a close.

The Lady Jaguars picked up four wins in seven games in the SoCal Tournament in mid-October, and have won two of the last four since then.

After finishing up with a win in their final SoCal Tournament game, the Lady Jags traveled to Mission Vista on Oct. 23 and suffered a 3–1 loss, with game scores of 30–28, 17–25, 16–25, 14–25. Jen Casillas led the way with 14 kills, three aces and four blocks, while Savanna Reilly added 12 kills and three blocks, Jasmine Contreras had four aces, Clara Padinski had four blocks and Susie Henderson had 27 assists.

The Lady Jaguars returned home to face Oceanside on Oct. 28 and methodically battled through the match to take a 3–0 win, with game scores of 25–11, 25–23, 25–20. Reilly led a total-team attack with nine kills, while Casillas had seven, Charlotte Connell had three, Emily Miller had two and both Padinski and Brienna Dunckel each had one. Reilly and Annika Odeen each added an ace as well, while Casillas had three blocks, Henderson had 15 assists and Brooke DeLauder had eight assists.

Valley Center took to face Ramona, and couldn't battle back from an early deficit to suffer a 3–1 loss, with game scores of 16–25, 25–23, 19–25, 10–25. Casillas led her team with 11 kills and two blocks, while Odeen had six kills and an ace, Dunckel had four kills, Padinski had three kills, Contreras had two aces, Henderson had 17 assists and DeLauder had seven assists.

Once again the Lady Jaguars returned home, this time to take on Orange Glen on Friday, and they took an early lead and never looked back in a 3–0 win, with game scores of 25–13, 25–10, 25–19. Casillas again set the pace for Valley Center with nine kills, two aces and a block, while Odeen added four kills and two aces, Padinski had four kills and three blocks, Contreras had two aces, DeLauder had 21 assists and Henderson had seven assists.

After playing against Del Norte on Wednesday, the Lady Jags have one more match this season, which comes on Friday at home against Mission Vista at 4:45 p.m.
