The new season has been something of a struggle for the Valley Center varsity girls basketball team, but the Lady Jaguars have improved on both sides of the ball as the season has progressed, and they picked up their first win last week.

After dropping their first two games, the Lady Jags took part in the San Diego Classic Tournament that began last Wednesday.

Valley Center opened the tournament with a 42–21 loss to University City, as the Lady Jags fell behind early and couldn't keep pace down the stretch.

The Lady Jaguars played much better in the next game, but still suffered a 42–37 loss to El Capitan, despite a strong run in the fourth quarter in a comeback attempt.

But in their final game of the tournament, the Lady Jaguars put together four outstanding quarters of basketball and beat Mar Vista, 46–27.

And in their most recent action, the Lady Jaguars hosted Escondido on Friday night but couldn't find a way to beat the Lady Cougars' full-court press and suffered a 69–29 loss.

With the first win now under their belts, the Lady Jaguars begin play in the Aztec Holiday Classic Tournament that begins on Saturday and goes through Dec. 30.
