As 2014 is the Year of the Horse, the Valley Center Vaqueros are getting ready for the community's first Day Of The Horse celebration, which is coming Feb. 1. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a rain-out date of March 1, at the Vaqueros Park, located at the corner of Valley Center Road and Lilac Road.

Our local horsemanship group hopes the event will become an annual event, as they celebrate and promote the equine lifestyle in our community and support horse ownership.

With the Day of the Horse now less than a month away, the Vaqueros have a few important dates coming up.

Today, Jan. 9, the Vaqueros will hold their first general meeting of the new year at 7 p.m. in the Community Center. Due to work being completed on the floor of the basement, the group will be meeting in a room up the stairs and to the right. Nine-year-old Lacey Bainbridge will be the guest speaker, sharing about her experiences in endurance races. See more information about Lacey in an article in this month's Vaqueros newsletter, which is available by emailing vaquerosnewsletter@gmail.com.The Vaqueros also have a work party scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, and the group need lots of help to clean up the park for the big event. All are welcome to come out and help in whatever way they can!

Help will also be needed on Feb. 1 for Day of the Horse, including check in vendors and presenters as they arrive, greeting guests and providing them with a program, escorting horses and riders safely through the park, and more. Please email vaquerosnewsletter@gmail.com if you can help and if there is a specific area and/or time frame you would like to help.

And in other club news, Jerilyn Lagus is stepping down from her position as a board member for Vaqueros.

Sharon Murphy has been nominated for this position and a vote will be held at the general meeting on Thursday for this position. Additional nominations are welcome. Please email club president Deanne Sanderson at deannesanderson@cox.net if you or someone you know is interested.
