Despite two second-half goals, Lady Jags fall to Del Norte in soccer
January 31, 2014With the last win having come on Dec. 10, the Valley Center varsity girls soccer team has been looking forward to league play for the past few weeks.
But even after the Lady Jaguars earned three ties and suffered four losses since that last win, the beginning of league play proved to be no help in the win column, as they dropped their first two league games last week.
The Lady Jags hosted Oceanside last Wednesday and suffered a 4–1 loss, then hosted Del Norte on Friday and couldn't overcome a three-goal deficit at halftime to take a 3–2 loss.
Even though the final score gave the win to the Lady Nighthawks, the Lady Jaguars' play in the second half gives the team plenty to build on going forward.
Del Norte scored two goals in the first half and added a third less than eight minutes into the second half. But Valley Center wouldn't give up and got on the scoreboard with just over 14 minutes left in the game. The Lady Jags earned a free kick from about 30 yards out and Emily Venisse drifted a perfect kick that went over the keeper's hands and just under the crossbar to get her team's breakthrough.
Less than four minutes later, the Lady Jaguars scored again, this time off a throw-in deep in Del Norte territory. Defender Helen Lopez out-jumped the Lady Nighthawks in front of the net and put the ball past the keeper to pull her team to within a goal with plenty of time left.
Valley Center's defense played strong down the stretch, and goalkeeper Nicole Venisse came up with some amazing saves to keep her team in the game. But despite some nice passing and great hustle, the Lady Jags couldn't get the equalizer and time ran out.
The Lady Jaguars hit the road for a pair of games this week, as they play at Ramona on Wednesday and at Orange Glen on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
