Lady Jags go to overtime to get rivalry win in basketball
February 06, 2014It may have taken a little longer than usual, but the Valley Center varsity girls basketball team survived a buzzer-beater from rival Orange Glen to get a big 62–56 win and help the school celebrate rivalry week. The Lady Jaguars hosted the Lady Patriots on Friday night and jumped out to an early lead with good passing and shooting. Valley Center pulled ahead by two, 15–13, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Jags extended the lead to 27–23 by halftime and kept going in the third quarter to hold a 40–35 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. But Orange Glen fought back in the final period and pushed the game into overtime with a two-point jump shot at the buzzer that tied the game at 54. In the extra period, Valley Center's Hannah Keller took over, scoring five of her team's eight points, while the defense held Orange Glen to only one basket, sealing the win. "We're such a young team, we've had to learn how to win," said head coach Tony Casillas. "Orange Glen played tough and made their shots, and they're getting better, just like us. We're developing the process and we're learning how to win. We played tough, we played smart, and it helps when we make our shots. The defense stepped up, especially in overtime. This is a good group of girls who have worked hard all season. We hope this is another step in the right direction." Next up for the Lady Jags is a home game against Oceanside on Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
