VC boys soccer team beats Mission Vista, falls to Oceanside
February 13, 2014The Valley Center varsity boys soccer team has had an up-anddown season this year, but the Jaguars have been slowly gaining momentum through the league portion of the schedule.
The Jags are now 2–2–1 through the midway point of league play, having beaten Mission Vista but following that with a tough loss against Oceanside. Valley Center faced Mission Vista on the road last Wednesday and got the lift they needed from freshman striker Austin Reser, who scored a pair of goals on assists from Rod Rodriguez to give his team a 2–0 win.
Reser's first goal came when he outran the defense to connect on a perfect crossing pass from Rodriguez. A few minutes later, the duo hooked up again when Rodriguez got behind the defense and crossed the ball back to Reser just outside the 18-yard box for a beautiful goal in the top corner.
The Jaguars returned home on Friday to face Oceanside, but couldn't capitalize on their chances and suffered a 2–0 loss. Oceanside scored in the opening minutes of both halves, and although the Jags were given a penalty kick with under two minutes left before halftime, the Pirate goalkeeper made a great save to keep the shutout intact.
"Like we said at the beginning of the season, we have a fairly young team, and some of the mistakes are just a lack of experience," said head coach Dale Blasius. "We showed good hustle, and with four games left, overall the season hasn't been bad. We have a chance to have more league victories than last year, and maybe qualify for CIF."
Those four games left on the schedule are Wednesday's game at home against Del Norte, followed by a game at Ramona on Friday at 5:15 p.m., then another home game next Wednesday against Mission Vista at 5:15 p.m., followed by the regularseason finale at Orange Glen on Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
