Jaguars drop two more in basketball, bring losing streak to eight
February 13, 2014The new year hasn't been kind to the Valley Center varsity boys basketball team. The Jaguars bid farewell to 2013 with a trio of wins in the annual Aztec Classic Holiday Tournament, but have struggled to put points on the board since then, and have yet to record a win in 2014.
Over the last eight games since the previous win, the Jaguars have been outscored 518–305, with opponents averaging nearly 65 points per game and the Jags coming with an average of only 38 points per game. After an especially rough loss to rival Orange Glen at home two weeks ago, the Jaguars traveled to Mission Vista last Wednesday and were handed a 49–38 loss.
The Timberwolves jumped out to an early lead with 15 points in the first quarter and ten more in the second to put the Jags down 25 –16 at halftime.
Valley Center came back to post solid numbers in the second half with 11 points in each of the final two quarters, but Mission Vista kept up the pace with 24 more points to seal the win. The Jaguars returned home on Friday to face Oceanside, and despite keeping the game close early, things got out of hand fast in a 72–36 loss.
Behind some solid shooting from Terrence Becvar, the Jags pulled to within four of the Pirates late in the first quarter. But a layup at the buzzer gave Oceanside a 17–11 lead at the end of the opening period. The Pirates pulled away in the second quarter with 26 points, while the Jags added only five points to trail 43–16 at the half. Oceanside continued the onslaught in the second half, leading 62–28 through three quarters and coasting through the final quarter to take the big win.
Valley Center has four more chances to get back in the win column before the end of the regular season. The Jags host Del Norte on Wednesday, then play at Ramona on Friday before hosting Mission Vista next Wednesday and wrapping up the season at Orange Glen on Feb. 21. Each of these games is set for 7 p.m.
