VC boys soccer team splits two games, has two games left in regular season
Jason Blasius winds up for a long free kick.
February 21, 2014The Valley Center varsity boys soccer team took another step toward the playoffs this week, as the Jaguars overcame a tough loss early in the week to bounce back for a win on the road in the second game.
The Jags hosted Del Norte on Wednesday and couldn't keep up with the Nighthawks in a 4–2 loss.
Del Norte scored a pair of goals in the first half, and although Valley Center answered with a goal before halftime, the Jaguars couldn't get back into the game in the second half, giving up two more goals and only scoring once.
Anthony Rizo played a great game with a goal and an assist, while Dano Da Silva scored the second goal and Jason Blasius added an assist.
Despite the hard loss, the Jaguars came together for Friday's game at Ramona and played an excellent game on both sides of the ball for a 2–0 shutout win.
Rizo got the scoring started in the first half on a goal set up by a perfect pass from Cristobal Collazo right down the middle of the field. And in the second half, defender Paul Schaner dribbled through two Ramona midfielders and drilled a left footed shot from about 30 yards out that skimmed a Ramona defender just enough to change the ball flight and send the shot past the keeper.
Valley Center goalie Gavin Marcon turned in one of his best performances of the season with key save after key save to preserve the shutout. And the Jags also got a big boost from midfielder Rod Rodriguez, stopper Julian Flores and sweeper Jason Blasius in the win.
"The boys played one of their best games this year," said head coach Dale Blasius after the win. "They showed lots of hustle and had great passing and building up to attack."
The Jaguars now have two games remaining in the regular season. They have already hosted Mission Vista on Wednesday and they wrap up the season at Orange Glen on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
