Four girls, three boys make soccer all-league for White Tigers

March 19, 2014
The Coastal League soccer coaches placed four Escondido Charter High School girls on the all-league teams while bestowing all-league recognition upon three White Tigers boys players.

The girls first team included Jurelly Tello and Brianna Torres. Grace Busby and Victoria Marino were on the girls all-league second team. Josue Flores represented Escondido Charter on the boys all-league first team. Boys second-team distinction was achieved by Mathew El-hayek and Angel Flores.

"Both teams did an excellent job in terms of competing in a very tough Coastal League where there were a lot of excellent soccer teams. Both teams worked hard and we're proud of their success," said Escondido Charter athletic director Greg Brose.

Escondido Charter's girls posted a 15-3-2 regular-season record, including an 8-3-1 league figure worth second place in the seven-team Coastal League final standings. The girls were given the top seed in the CIF Division III playoffs, followed a first-round bye with a 2-1 overtime victory over Ramona in the quarterfinals, and lost a 1-0 semifinal match to eventual CIF champion High Tech High Chula Vista. The Escondido Charter boys finished with an overall record of 8-9-2, including a CIF Division V playoff loss to Mission Vista and a 3-5-2 Coastal League mark which placed fourth among the six boys teams.

Tello, a senior, was a defender in past seasons but became the White Tigers' goalkeeper for 2013-14. "… Did a phenomenal job. She's very athletic and really aggressive," Brose said.

Torres is a sophomore. She plays both forward and midfielder, but Brose noted that she also has strong defensive skills. "Brianna did a great job in terms of her leadership and in terms of her ability to defend other teams' leading offensive players," Brose said.

Busby is a junior who played forward for Escondido Charter. "She was among our leading scorers and did a phenomenal job of attacking the ball," Brose said.

Marino played midfield and was also one of the team's senior captains. "Excellent in her leadership and in her ability to control the center part of the field," Brose said.

Josue Flores is a junior and was one of the White Tigers' forwards during the season. "Good player, great hustle and determination, really was a spark plug in our offense this year," Brose said.

El-hayek is a senior and was Escondido Charter's goalkeeper. "He did a great job and showed a lot of improved effort and determination," Brose said.

Angel Flores, a sophomore, was a defender. "Showed perseverance and hustle, basically was our main leader back in the defense line," Brose said.
