VC Softball team wins Jaguar classic tournament championship

Valley Center's varsity softball team went undefeated through six games in the annual Jaguar Classic Tournament over the past two weeks, and the Lady Jaguars earned the tournament championship with a pair of wins Saturday.

The Lady Jags beat Mission Bay 12–0 and downed Montgomery 12–2 in the first two games of the tournament, then settled in for a pair of games with much closer scores.

At El Camino last Tuesday, the Lady Jaguars rallied behind Kiana Diefenbachs' three hits to take a 3–1 win.

Diefenbach also drove in two runs and scored a run with her three hits. While Moyla Devers had both a hit and an RBI, Maddie Boyer had a double and Brie. And Dunckel had a hit.

Emma Sloman got the win for pitching five shutout innings, allowing only one hit and one walk, with one strikeout. Nia Hutton got the save for pitching two innings in relief and allowing one run on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

Next came a home game against Granite Hills last Thursday, as the Lady Jags blanked the Lady Eagles 3–0.

Diefenbach once again led the way with a hit and an RBI, while Leilani Diefenbach had both a hit and a scored run. Hutton and Sloman each had a hit and Dunckel scored a run.

Sloman pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits in the win.

Then, Saturday the Lady Jags played a pair of games at home, beginning with a rematch against El Camino that ended in a 10–9 Valley Center win.

Devers was outstanding at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, while Jasmine Contreras had three hits and two RBIs. Kiana Diefenbach had two hits and two RBIs,. Dunckel had two hits. Leilani Diefenbach had a hit and an RBI. Boyer had a hit.

Hutton got the win for the Lady Jaguars for pitching seven innings and allowing five runs on seven hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts. Sloman also made an appearance and allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits without recording an out.

In the tournament championship, Valley Center hosted Point Loma. The teams lit up the scoreboard before the Lady Jaguars took the title with a 16–10 win.

Leilani Diefenbach carried the big bat for the Lady Jags, as she racked up three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Meanwhile, Dunckel had three hits and an RBI. Devers had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Kiana Diefenbach had two hits and two RBIs. Contreras had two hits, including a double and an RBI. Hutton had a home run and two RBIs. Boyer had a hit and an RBI, while Sloman had a hit.

Hutton earned another win for pitching three innings and giving up two runs on seven hits. Sloman started the game and gave up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings of work.

Valley Center has already started league play with a home game against Ramona Monday. And the Lady Jags play again Friday at Orange Glen at 3:30 p.m.
