The Lady Jaguars are back on track
Savanna Fiehler (8) scored four goals for the Lady Jaguars against St. Catherine's
April 09, 2014With four wins in a row start, the Valley Center Varsity Girls Lacrosse team closed out the month of March with a pair of losses.
First-year head coach, Mariah Bohnstehn, and the Lady Jaguars returned to work as April began with the intent to get their team back on track.
"We worked alot on ball movement," said Coach Bohnstehn, who shared, "We were more motivated and we had a better attitude in practice. We want everyone to touch the ball on offense and we used what we learned this week to win."
The first of the two wins came on Friday at home against Ramona, as the Lady Jags jumped ahead early and held on for a 10–6 win.
Valley Center pulled out to a 4–1 lead midway through the first half, then kept scoring to take an 8–2 lead at halftime.
Ramona answered with a pair of goals to start the second half, making the score 8–4, and the Lady Jaguars came right back with two goals of their own to pull back out to a six-goal lead. While the Lady Bulldogs added two more goals in the closing minutes, the game had already been decided.
Then Saturday, the Lady Jags hosted a team from St. Catherine's, a school in Surrey, England, for the annual intercontinental matchup between the two teams.
The girls from across the pond came to Valley Center to play games against Poway, Canyon Crest Academy, Mt. Carmel and Valley Center. They also enjoyed lunch and dinner at the Stehly Ranch with the Lady Jaguars.
On the field, the game turned out to be a hard-fought battle, as Valley Center took a slim lead at halftime and held on for an 11–8 victory.
The Lady Jags pulled out to a good lead at 5–2 in the final six minutes of the first half, but St. Catherine's came back with two goals in the final five minutes to pull within one, 5–4, at halftime.
The teams traded goals back and forth throughout the second half, but Bianka Pacheco and Kaylin Ryan each scored twice for the Lady Jaguars' final four goals that sealed the win.
Ryan and Savanna Fiehler led the offense with four goals each in the game, while Pacheco added two and Nina Montejano scored once.
The Lady Jaguars were without starting goaltender Parris Toedt, who despite this being her second year as a goalkeeper, has developed into one of the top goalies in the county. In Toedt's absence, defender Cierra Serrano stepped up and played a great game in goal, making five key saves and earning the win for her team.
"It was a very exciting game," Coach Bohnstehn said. "Both teams were playing at top speed and ball movement was on point. Playing St. Catherine's is always such a treat. We had a great time getting to know them at the Stehly Ranch. We all enjoyed taking the tour there and eating, of course!"
Valley Center has already played a pair of games this week, having played on the road at Grossmont on Tuesday and at San Marcos on Wednesday. The team has a week off before returning to action Monday, April 21, with a home game against Del Norte at 6:30 p.m.
