Jags continue winning streak over Mt. Carmel
Jason Blasius advances for the goal undeterred by Mt. Carmel defender Q. Oribello for the goal.
May 07, 2014The Valley Center Jaguars boys' varsity lacrosse team continued their winning streak against Mt. Carmel High School by defeating the Sun Devils14-7 on the Jag's home turf.
The Jaguars took an early lead in the first quarter with a 9-0 lead. With the start of the second quarter, Mt. Carmel managed to hold the line by scoring four goals. But, Valley Center came back with a goal of their own. The score at the end of the first half was 10-4 with a Jaguar advantage.
The second half of the competition found the Sun Devils making a futile attempt at a comeback. They were thwarted by the Jaguar defense. It appeared the Sun Devils had some real problems with their passing game – a weakness the Valley Center team exploited to the max. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 11-7 Valley Center.
Coach Telleman quickly regrouped his players, strategized, and made his corrections which paid off for the Jaguars when they again took to the field and did not allow the Sun Devils to score for the balance of the game. The Jaguars held the line and deprived the Sun Devils of Mt. Carmel of a significant and sorely needed victory.
Valley Center's Jason Brewster led the Jags in goals with a total of six and one assist. Jason Blasius scored three goals and had one assist. John Luna, never to be left out of the fight, had eight shots to score and scored on two with one assist. Contributing to the Jag's victory were Andrew Chestnut, followed by Dawson Pastuma with one goal and one assist each. In the second quarter, Jag's goalie Phalen Reiger had one save and goalie Kyle Stroud had a save in the fourth quarter.
In a post game conversation with Coach Telleman he said: "We had a hot start that we had not had in a while in the first quarter. They threw a 33 zone at us, which caught us by surprise and we had to adjust, but man to man we can hang with anybody. They were a tough team, but we came out the winner."
The Jaguars now stand 11-2-1, and 5-1 in their league. At time of press the Jags will confront Canyon Crest Academy. The results will follow, so stay tuned to the Roadrunner. On May 9 at 7 p.m., the Jaguars will faceoff with the San Marcos Knights at San Marcos.
