Boats will be available for rent for those who want to go out for a day of Derby fishing.
As in past years, this event draws participants from all over Southern California. The Derby is only nine days away and starts at 6 a.m. until midnight on July 5. There will be prizes awarded for the biggest catfish caught in various categories. It is a free fishing day in the state of California and licenses are not required. Lake fishing permits are the only requirement. The cost of the lake permit is $7 for adults, and $5 for youth and seniors. Active military special is a motor boat rental (daylight hours) of $20. Permits can be purchased at the Smokey's Lake Wohlford Cafe.

Some serious fishermen prove that Lake Wohlford is well stocked on Derby Day 2013.
The grand prize of $500 will be awarded for the largest catfish caught. There are division prizes for active military, adult (16 and over), and youth (15 & under). Prizes need to be claimed within a week of the Derby. Should there be a tie, the first fish weighed in will be declared the winner. All fish must be weighed in between 6 a.m. and midnight if participating in the Derby and must be marked by the Lake Wohlford Rangers. Each fisherman must keep his or her separate stringer.

If you are looking for something to do with the family that doesn't break the budget or just want a chance to listen to some tall tales "of the one that got away," this is the place.

For more information, call the Lake Wohlford Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346 or go online at www.wohlfordlake.com. Special assistance for those who may need help to maximize their participation can be helped by calling Escondido's ADA coordinator at (760) 839-4641.
