2014 Lake Wohlford Catfish Derby a success
July 09, 2014The annual Lake Wohlford Catfish Derby Opening Day sponsored by the city of Escondido and The Bass Pro Shops was held on July 5. Approximately1,000 fishermen participated with skill levels from novice to very experienced came out on a very beautiful day.
As in past years, this event drew participants from all over Southern California. The Derby started at 6 a.m. sharp and continued until midnight. Prizes were awarded for the biggest catfish caught in the various categories. It was a free fishing day in the state of California. Licenses were not required, but lake fishing permits were.
The grand prize of $500 was awarded to Ron Horner for the largest catfish weighing in at nine pounds,11 ounces. In the Active Duty Military Division the first place prize was awarded to Chris Gentz with a three pound, 12 ounce fish. Second place went to Nate Quillan with a fish weighing in at two pounds, two ounces, and third place went to Anthony North with a catfish weighing in at one pound, seven ounces. The Adult Division (16+) first place went to Charles Danel with a nine pounds, nine ouncer. Second place came in at seven pounds, 2.6 ounces caught by Joe Casteel, and the third place Adult Division prize went to Peter Bitkis with his fish weighing in at seven pounds, one ounce. Youth Division (15 & under) first place went to Bret Posiaeex with his catch at two pounds, 12 ounces, Patrick Saysana took second place with his weighing two pounds, 10 ounces, and third place went to Van Mc Nally with a catfish weighing in at two pounds, one ounce.
If you are looking for something to do with the family that doesn't break the budget or just a chance to listen to some tall tales "of the one that got away," this is the place. It's better than a day of "Honey Do Lists," pulling weeds, and better than any day at work. Make it a point to come out next year to join the fun and, who knows, maybe you'll be one of the lucky winners.
