San Pasqual softball team take second place at Soboba
August 06, 2014The San Pasqual Tribal Softball team ages 10-14 years were awarded second place in their Division B All Inter-Tribal Softball League. The San Pasqual Band of Indians are active participants in the Inter-Tribal Sports Program which enables Native American youth an opportunity to participate in sporting competition.
Losing to Viejas 6-5, the team from San Pasqual came back to Sunday's tournament and defeated the ITS Softball team from Pala in a hotly contested game. The final score was 11-7. On the same afternoon, they took on the number one Division B team from Rincon with a final score of 7-12.
San Pasqual's Jeremy Clay scored three homeruns while Keith Vasquez led the team with four homers. The San Pasqual ITS team members included Makaio Bucsip, Nicanor Alvarado, Josh Alvarado, Sabrina Martinez, Kenny Garcia, Alyssa Muniz, Josh Clay, Damien Murillo, Jorge Martinez, Jeremy Clay, Coaches are Victor Navarro and Armando Martinez.
"We are very proud of the effort and good sportsmanship of our team. These kids have been great to coach," said head coach Victor Navarro. "They have good attitudes, and team spirit. We are looking forward to the next season."
Sports programs are provided in a healthy environment with the goals and opportunity to build self confidence, boost self esteem, sportsmanship, self respect, respect for others, a sense of belonging, and nurturing of friendships through peer bonding. This all encouraged a sense of responsibility to one another to excel, not only in sports, but in their education. The sports program is open to all tribes, and non-tribal youth providing they reside on the reservation.
