Crystal Rienick was honored as District Teacher of the Year 2013 at the Feb. 13 meeting of the Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District board meeting.

Rienick was hired in 1998 and began her career in Valley Center at Valley Center Middle School as an English teacher. Currently she teaches English at Valley Center High School. Supt. Lou Obermeyer praised this year's honoree. "Crystal's devotion to students and her dedication to teaching them is outstanding. Her energy, love of the subject, interest in every student's success and delightful personality make her an excellent choice for this award. Crystal is called the genius behind the Poetry Out Loud contest and we have students each year advance to the state level competition."

Dr. Obermeyer quoted Nicole McGinnis, an English teacher at the high school, " 'Getting to work with Crystal is like working with an Olympic Medalist. I see her success and am so inspired to train harder so that I can aspire to her greatness and effectiveness as a teacher. Crystal is in her room daily at lunch flocked by a gaggle of students just waiting for her attention and help. She is so selfless and such a talented professional. It really is an honor to work with her and learn from her.' "

Rienick told the audience, "I have adjectives floating around in my head. It is shock and bewilderment and an honor. I work with the most incredible teachers, inspiring people who inspire me to do better every day. I'm shocked and bewildered because I am surrounded by these people and such extraordinary students."

Also honored was Vicki Harding District Classified Employee of the Year 2013. Harding is the attendance clerk at Valley Center Middle School. She was hired in 1998 as an instructional aide and she moved in the to health clerk position in 2003. Dr. Obermeyer said, "Vicki is known for her patience and she is a compassionate and kind-hearted person. Vicki always has a smile on her face and has a very positive attitude – whether she is answering the phone, attending to sick students, entering attendance information or one of the other hundreds of tasks she performs each day.

"The students love Vicki and her positive attitude has a wonderful impact on their lives. The care and attention she gives to each student is amazing and they love her for it," said Dr. Obermeyer.
