In case you have been wondering about the blue ribbons on the Heritage Trail, here is the answer. They are being used to call attention to the sixth annual Friends of the Poor Walk, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14.

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit needy families in Valley Center and Pauma Valley by raising funds for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Walkers are asked to have their friends and family members sponsor them on their walk. Some walkers tread one mile on the Heritage Trail, while other participants may choose to go further.

The Food Pantry is open to all families of any faith who are in need. It is located in the lower parking lot of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 31020 Cole Grade Road in Valley Center. The pantry is open on Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

There are currently more than 800 families registered for food, but only 90 families come to the pantry on any given Saturday morning. The pantry does receive FEMA food once a year, but that is quickly dispersed. Funds from the walk are used to buy beans, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, soap and soup.

In the past the pantry also received generous donations from various local clubs and organizations, as well as receiving the results of local food drives.

Participants of the event will gather under the arbors at Adams Park, 28751 Cole Grade Road, Valley Center at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 14. Walkers will use the Heritage Trail before returning to Adams Park. Free T-shirts will be issued to the first 100 walkers. The walk is sponsored by the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Valley Center.
