"A telescope sitting in a closet is worthless," said astronomer Bob Karl of Oceanside, formerly of Lompoc Observatory, as he instructed a group of Valley Centerites on Friday and Saturday evenings on the wonders of the night sky, pointing out Venus along with the Milky Way, Andromeda, Double Cluster of Perseus, the Summer Triangle and other constellations. He showed them how to use his Meade LX-200 telescope and binoculars and took questions from the group. The two-night event was part of the new Starry Nights program, hosted by Bates Nut Farm, in their East Field.
