Operation Christmas Child is back in Valley Center
October 31, 2013Operation Christmas Child had several milestones last year, not only did they deliver their 100 millionth shoebox, but the Valley Center community became involved in packing shoeboxes as well.
Operation Christmas Child has been delivering shoebox gifts for over 20 years to over 130 countries. They deliver boxes to children who often would never receive a gift in their lives. Boxes have been delivered to war-torn ruins in Sarajevo, Bosnia; squalid slums in Chennai, India; an earthquake-flattened orphanage in Leogane, Haiti; a trash dump that is the home to the poorest of the poor in Managua, Nicaragua; and a hospital ward filled with children dying of AIDS in Soweto, South Africa.
These generous gifts demonstrate to them that they have a network of caring people from all over the world.
Valley Center residents have the option of donating a completed shoebox for a child, or donating new items which will be packed into shoeboxes. Suggested ideas of what to give a child are: new toys, hygiene items, school supplies, hard candy, a letter telling them about your family, etc. Brochures with ideas on what to pack in the box can be found at the supporting businesses (listed below) or online at www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box.
A box may be packed for a boy or a girl, ranging across three different age brackets: 2-4, 5-9, and 10-14 years old. The brochures include a label (designating which age group and what gender) which may be attached to the box.
These local businesses will have brochures and will also have collection boxes from Oct. 26 through Nov. 1, Bates Nut Farm, Country Junction Deli, and The Vineyard Wines and Tastes.
Local churches are also involved: The AWANA program at Valley Center Community Church, Horizon Valley Center, and Valley Baptist. Brochures can be picked up and items can also be dropped off at the Horizon Valley Center office at 28904 Valley Center Road, suite D.
