The reigning California State champs in the under-12 division, the Valley Center Avengers Rugby Club, are organizing an electronic waste drop-off day this Saturday to raise money for their travel costs. It's a great opportunity to support local youth sports while also safely disposing of your electronic waste.

"If you do take it to a dump, they charge you a pretty good fee," said Mark Ginella, Valley Center Youth Rugby president. "This allows you to do it in a safe and cheap manner."

The Avengers will be out directing the recycling bonanza in the parking lot of Valley Center Elementary School from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Acceptable items to drop off include TV sets, VCRs, computers, cell phones, car batteries, gaming consoles, household appliances, and printers.

They will not be accepting light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, or alkaline batteries.

Electronic waste contains hazardous materials that should not be going into landfills, so it is important to dispose of these materials in the right way. Alianza Electronic Recycling and Recovery is the contractor for the event, and the Avengers will earn a percentage from Alianza based on the total weight of the e-waste brought in.

Rugby season will kick off this year with a free rugby clinic on Dec. 7 at VC Elementary. Athletes ages 7-14 are invited to come and be a part of the team that took the California State Games by storm last year.

"All the teams that started out beating us a few years ago, now we're beating them," said Ginella.
