Valley Center High School senior Jason Blasius recently received an appointment to the Air Force Academy next fall.

Blasius met Congressman Duncan Hunter last Thursday to receive his certificate.

Blasius has lived in Valley Center since moving from San Marcos in 2004. He received the Outstanding Student Award on graduating from Valley Center Middle School and he has been a fixture on the field for the Jaguars since coming to VCHS. He was a starter and a team captain for the varsity boys soccer team his junior and senior years and a member of the varsity lacrosse team his junior and senior years, being named a team captain his senior year.

In the classroom, Blasius ranks in the top five in grades for his 2014 graduating class. He is also the Vice President of ASB (Associated Student Body) this year, where he has been working on leadership and motivation skills

"I know it's hard to get into the Air Force Academy, and I feel lucky they picked me," said Blasius. "To be a part of the Air Force brotherhood, to have the chance to share the focus of service, honor and leadership is great gift. Surrounded by a community that mirrors the same core values as I aspire to would be a wonderful opportunity that I'll appreciate and do everything possible to succeed.

"I really like how athletic the entire student body is, with fitness and academics a strong focus throughout the college years. I'm lucky to have had the opportunities I've had a VCHS, and I'm grateful to the great teachers and coaches I've had here who have prepared me for the next step."

About 13,000 students apply to the Air Force Academy each year nationwide, of which the Academy selects about 1,100. Each applicant must go through an interview process to get a recommendation from their congress person or senator. The Air Force Academy's mission is to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.
