Bates Nut Farm will be home to the annual GourdStock Festival hosted by San Diego County Gourd Artists and California Gourd Society groups. This celebration of all-things-gourd features classes, demonstrations, competition and exhibits. The Festival takes place June 28 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public. There will be gourd art on exhibit and for sale, demonstrations, hands-on workshops, raw gourds, and a variety of vendors.

Many classes will be offered beginning June 26 and continuing through June 29. These classes will appeal to a broad range of skill levels and interests. Class size is limited, and pre-registration is required. Go to www.sandiegocountygourdpatch.com for more information or to download a class catalog.

Gourd decoration is an ancient tradition in Africa and Asia, as well as among indigenous peoples of the Americas. Gourd crafting and painting has evolved from early hand carvings to the modern day use of electric wood burners and high-speed rotary tools. They can be ornamental or useful. No longer just a craft, gourd art has been elevated to fine art status, finding a home in galleries and museums.

Bates Nut Farm is located 20 minutes east of I-15 through Escondido at 15954 Woods Valley Road in Valley Center. Farm and Store hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Entrance to the farm and parking are free. For more information and directions call (760) 749-3333 or visit www.batesnutfarm.biz.
