On Saturday, San Diego’s biggest names in local television turned out for the 31st annual Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards to honor the finest local TV programs of 2004.
The attendees were among the Who’s Who List of San Diego media, but the winner for one major award wasn’t a celebrated news anchor or an investigative reporter. The Emmy for Best Historical/Biographical Program was given to Richard Rivera, a local independent producer who also works at the Valley Center Branch Library.
The show Rivera produced, called Creating the Big Eye, tells the tale of the construction of North County’s Palomar Observatory and its weighty 200 inch telescope.
Rivera produced the program for the KPBS Public Affairs show, Full Focus.
Rivera, who used a Valley Center historian and a Palomar Observatory astronomer to help tell the story of the telescope’s construction, admitted to being amazed by the win of the prestigious prize. “It was my first Emmy nomination,” he explained. “It was enough just to have the nomination, but to win on your first try, that was astonishing.”
Along with writing and producing Creating the Big Eye, Rivera is just finishing another documentary for Full Focus about the history of the San Diego Presidio. Rivera has also written and produced prime time documentaries for Discovery Channel, History Channel and Animal Planet.
