The Corner Skillet, the long anticipated hamburger and Mexican cuisine drive-through eatery at the corner of Cole Grade & Valley Center Roads will probably open in a couple of weeks, says owner Loralee Stephens.
Mrs. Stephens, who also owns the Courtyard, has been working for several months with the County to meet their requirements.
During that time one of Valley Center’s most distinguished artists, Wenthy Collins, has been painting a mural inside that will knock patrons’ socks off.
The restaurant will be open probably six days a week, with hours to be announced later.
It will be a walk-in restaurant with seating on the patio.
It will specialize in upscale, quality burgers, and Mexican cuisine. Managing it will be Maria Sanchez of El Indio De Tijuana (better known to most folks as “The Barrel”) in Escondido.
Eventually, says Mrs. Stephens, she would like to add a coffee bar and pastries in the morning.
VC Municipal Water District could annex the tiny San Luis Rey Municipal Water District and provide service to the 1150 home Pardee development near I-15 if LAFCO decides that’s the best option.
LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission) is a state commission that oversees boundaries of special districts.
Representatives of Pardee Homes, who want water and sewer services for the proposed Meadowood development, spoke to the VC water board on Oct. 17 about the possibility of VCMWD providing such service.
The 300 acres is in the San Luis Rey Municipal Water District which abuts Fallbrook and VC. It is not in the Metropolitan Water District, the big supplier of water to Southern California, nor in the San Diego County Water Authority, the supplier to San Diego County.
SLRMWD is seeking permission to join both agencies.
LAFCO will eventually recommend which agency is best suited to serve Meadowood.
Pardee in 2004 had a pre-annexation agreement with the troubled Rainbow Municipal Water District. But in recent weeks that district’s board indicated that it wants to back away from its agreement.
Pardee has had informational meetings with Gary Arant, general manager of VCMWD.
For either VCMWD or Rainbow to serve Pardee would require annexing that land. SLRMWD could become part of VCMWD.
SLRMWD was founded in 1958. It consists of 3,000 acres. East of I-15, west of Pala, and along Hwy 76 and the river.
It currently does not have retail customers, but manages brown water and diversion rights for its members. It has applied to activate its latent powers to serve Pardee’s development.
The proposed Gregory Canyon landfill is within SLRMWD, which has two agreements to protect water quality.
LAFCO will soon send a questionnaire to affected persons and could make a decision on which agency will provide the service by summer.
About 200 school employees and admirers of Karen Jobe attended the VC-P school superintendent’s retirement festival Saturday afternoon at VC Community Center.
It was an afternoon combining joy in the accomplishments of her 33 years and the inevitable bittersweet sorrow that comes from saying goodbye to a woman who has been friend and mentor to many of those in attendance.
Speakers included Assistant Supt. Sarah Clayton, Middle School Principal Chris Sommer, Peggy Johnson, director of personnel, and former superintendent Jeff Mulford.
Tributes were also made by the district’s bus drivers and the office staff who presented a rap performance entitled Jobe Rocks the House.
Mrs. Jobe laughed at the jokes aimed at her and gave a moving tribute to her family and its values, and how those values shaped her career.
The event, sponsored by the Staples Foundation, raised 14.486 for the Maxine Theater.
At the end of the day Jack and Carolyn Bose presented two checks. One for $3,000 to purchase six chairs at the theater and another for $5,000, which brings their total donation to the Maxine Theater to $13,000.
At 2 a.m. this Sunday, Oct. 30, Daylight Savings Time will end, and clocks will “fall back” just as each year they “spring forward.”
In 2007 a new schedule, adopted by Congress, will take effect, but not this year.
In 2007, Daylight Savings Time will begin earlier, on the second Sunday in March, and end on the first Sunday in April.
Just as there is no good or demonstrable reason for Daylight Savings Time to occur at all, there is no actual reason for extending Daylight Savings Time, except that it will, according to some, “make people feel sunnier.”
The change is part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Some claims were made last summer that extending DST would save energy, but the U.S. Dept. of Energy has since then backed away from this notion.
Some people attribute the oriignal idea for Daylight Savings Time to Benjamin Franklin, but what he actually said was, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
The current schedule has been in effect since 1986, and other schedules were used before that, way back to the days of the First World War.
Arizona, Hawaii and the territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Savings Time at all.
The Maxine Theater will celebrate its premiere Nov. 19, 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale Nov. 1.
“It will be a once in a lifetime experience,” school Supt. Karen Jobe told her board at its October meeting.
Tickets will cost $30 apiece and the food will be free.
Music will be provided by the Crazy Rhythm Hot Society Orchestra from Orange County, playing music of the 1920s and 30s.
The orchestra will perform first inside the theater and then, weather permitting, take the music outside for dancing.
The premiere will offer the opportunity to honor the donors (whose names you’ll find in a flyer inserted in this week’s paper) and the theater’s design team.
Team Valley Center successfully completed the three day breast cancer walk on Oct. 14-16. Nationally the walk raised $10.3 million for the fight against breast cancer, and the team’s effort contributed significantly to that. The women in Team Valley Center are: Jamie Behneman, Cindy Marcon, Teresa McKeown, Jennifer Stone and Faith Much.
