Police Tuesday arrested a man who allegedly attempted to kills his girlfriend and then kidnapped their 5-month old baby boy on Hwy 76 on the La Jolla Indian Reservation. The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. An Amber Alert was issued on 8:10 a.m. The suspect was arrested around 10 a.m. in Vista after a short vehicle and foot chase.

Sheriff’s deputies later booked Kenneth Wayne Welch, 42 into the Vista jail. He is being held without bail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, child endangerment, domestic violence, evading police and violating conditions of his parole.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Poomacha Road at about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday for a domestic violence incidence. Deputies found Welch’s girlfriend, who had severe life threatening head and facial injuries. The injured woman had managed to escape from the vehicle in which she had been attacked. The victim was rushed to a local hospital.

After the attack Welch took his infant son, also named Kenneth. He later dropped off the baby with his sister, an Oceanside resident, who called the police, which led to Welch’s apprehension. The child is now in protective custody.
