U13 Hurricanes finish second in Memorial Day Supercup tournament

June 19, 2013

The Valley Center Girls U13 Hurricanes recently placed second in the fourth annual Memorial Day Supercup tournament.

Valley Center’s Hannah Schaner scored ten goals over the course of the tournament to lead the team to the fantastic finish.

Valley Center started the tournament by outlasting the East County Hotspurs 4–3 in a wild shoot out in a game that saw three scores by Schaner and one by Soliel Escalante.

The win propelled VC into game two against San Elijo Matrix, and the Lady Hurricanes dominated through a 2–0 shutout led by the goal keeping tandem of Jordan French and Ava Downey, and scores by Schaner and Melissa “Chicharita” Loera.

Sunday’s game three was a real breakout game, with the Lady Canes dominating the South Bay Atalante 6–3, led by three Schaner goals, a goal off a header by Cinthia Garcia, another goal by Loera, and an own goal charged to South Bay on a Schaner corner kick.

Valley Center went into the final to once again face Atalante. VC quickly got on top with two Schaner goals on bending, unassisted corner kicks. The third goal came from Ava Downey on an assist by Cinthia Garcia.

But Atalante battled back, and eventually through some unconventional and controversial play, was able to best the Lady Hurricanes 6–3.

”This tournament was a break out tournament for Valley Center,” said head coach Fred Downey. “It was a tremendous team effort against some high quality opponents.”
