Board hears presentation for proposed 40-acre Vesper Park

June 26, 2013

A grand park with a little something for everyone might become a reality in Valley Center if those who dream ever get linked up with those who write the checks.

At the June 13 meeting of the VC Parks & Rec District board, directors heard a presentation about a possible 43-acre park, currently known as the Berkel property that could be purchased with money that the district will realize when the seven acres it is selling to developer Jerry Gaughan closes escrow later this month.

The park is the vision of “green” architect Will Rogers, who has an office in Valley Center.

It is fairly common knowledge that the parks district is in the process of selling seven acres on the corner of VC Road & Lilac Road, but not so well known is that the board will be able to take some of the money it realizes from the sale and buy an even larger parcel on Vesper Road.

Rogers’s grand vision includes a two-story Community Center/Senior Center, amphitheatre, fitness center, boys and girls club or YMCA, equestrian staging area, picnic area, ball fields, sports fields, dog park, rodeo grounds carriage road/multipurpose trail, all centered around an irrigation pond fed by a seasonal stream that already exists.

The parks board will be further studying this proposal at future meetings.
