Garden club gives awards, scholarships at annual luncheon

The Dos Valles Garden Club presented its donations to the community, awards and scholarships at its annual general meeting and luncheon on June 18 at St. Stephen Community Hall.

Pauline Sechi, Joanne Berry and Shirley Skinner were recognized for winning awards from California Garden Clubs, Inc. Marcia Townsend and Joan Patten received the Dos Valles Garden Club Award of Appreciation for extraordinary service and outstanding accomplishments to the organization.

Valley Center Elementary School students Mae Chew, Leslie Lopez, Ashley Esquivias, Carla Nagy and Erika Kirby were awarded first place ribbons for their Smokey Bear— Woodsy Owl Posters that educate children about fire prevention and caring for the environment.

Teachers Katherine Curt, Camille Martineau and Danielle Bauer accepted checks for their gardening, agricultural, floriculture and landscape projects at the Valley Center elementary, middle and high schools.

Marian Klein, representing the Friends of the Library, explained how the club’s donation would be used to complete the renovation of the Children’s Library Project, which was started by the late Branch Librarian, Sandy Puccio.

Grangetto’s and Harrah’s Casino received the club’s Community Beautification Awards. Scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to Bresa Martin, Arissa Saliba and Nicholas Stehly who will be attending colleges to study conservation, horticulture, plant biology, botany and landscape architecture.

The meeting concluded with the installation of the 2013 – 2014 officers; Presidents, Kathy Lee and Anne Watkins, Vice-President, David Rylaarsdam, Treasurer, Joan Patten and Recording Secretary, Karen Burstein.
