Avengers Rugby Club wins gold in California State Games

August 14, 2013

With five wins in five matches, the Valley Center Avengers Rugby Club U12 boys recently won the gold medal in the California State U-12 Summer 7s Tournament.

The Avengers competed on July 13 in the 25th annual California State Games, held at Walnut Grove Park in San Marcos.

The Cal State Games is a statewide amateur sports festival that is a grassroots program of the United States Olympic Committee. The mission of the Games is to promote and nurture the health, education, and well-being of residents by managing a high quality amateur sports event that encourages community participation and provides an Olympic experience. Sports represented included basketball, soccer, water polo, hockey, wrestling, and many others.

The Avengers also were honored by presenting the Rugby banner and leading the rugby athletes from around the state at the Opening Ceremonies, held at Qualcomm

Stadium, where they joined 6,000 athletes from all over California in the athletes' parade into the stadium.

The club was awarded the state championship including the State Champion Banner and each player received a gold medal.

The Avengers went 50 during the competition and were outstanding in all aspects of the game. All parents and coaches were very proud, and players and other coaches from all over, including two stars on the USA Eagles Rugby team, congratulated the boys.

At the end of the day, the tournament selectors also made Max Smith the MVP for the entire rugby tournament, all age groups (U12's, U14's, U16's and High School). Congratulations, Avengers
